Pediatric Therapy: How Do I Know if My Child Needs Therapy?

The world can be a challenging place for kids. Many different factors can leave a child feeling helpless, anxious or uncomfortable. Whether the cause is a developmental delay, an accident or a neurodevelopmental disorder, children often need help from a specialized therapist to overcome the unique obstacles they face daily.

But how do you know if your child needs therapy or if they are simply experiencing the normal struggles associated with growing up? First, you should assess his or her specific challenges and determine when and where they are most evident. Do you notice any patterns at home? Is your child’s teacher concerned about certain behaviors at school? Do environmental factors trigger an unusual response?

There are many signs that could indicate your child might benefit from evidence-based, child-centered therapies. Here are a few of those indicators, based on age:

 0-3 Years Old

In these early years of development, you might notice your child has difficulty grasping objects. Delays in motor skills like rolling over, crawling or walking could signal a need for occupational therapy. If your child dislikes various textures, is overly active or uninterested in age-appropriate toys, a personalized therapy plan could minimize developmental deficits.

3-5 Years Old

At this stage, a child who is especially clumsy or uncoordinated could gain balance with the assistance of an experienced pediatric therapist. If your child is picky about foods with certain textures and smells, sensory integration therapy could help them cope with difficulties processing sensory input.

6-15 Years Old

School-age children and adolescents who have difficulty with social interaction and communication with peers can learn to feel more comfortable in their environment through an outcomes-oriented treatment plan. A short attention span, difficulty with multi-step tasks and even sleeping disorders can be significantly improved when individualized therapies are implemented.
